Programmable vs Screen Studio: which to choose

If you have a Mac and want real footage of your screen, choose Screen Studio. If you're not on a Mac, don't want to record, or want an animated film rather than a recording, choose Programmable. They're different methods, so this is less a contest than a choice of format.

Who each is for

Screen Studio is a screen recorder for macOS. You record your screen, and it adds zooms, a smoothed cursor, click effects and camera layouts. It suits people who can record a clean take and want the result to look edited, for demos and tutorials alike.

Programmable doesn't record your screen into the final film. You give it screenshots, Figma frames, a link or a short recording, and it builds an animated film of 15, 30 or 60 seconds around your interface, with captions and an optional AI voiceover. It suits people who want a short polished piece and would rather write a sentence than do a take.

So the first question isn't which tool is stronger. It's whether you want footage of the real thing or an animated film about it.

Where Screen Studio is better

  • It shows the real thing. A viewer sees your actual product running. For a tutorial, a bug report or a feature walkthrough for developers, that honesty matters. Programmable can't output real footage.
  • Length. Screen Studio share links handle up to 30 minutes. Programmable stops at 60 seconds, so anything instructional and long belongs here.
  • Resolution and motion. It exports up to 4K at 60 fps. Programmable's MP4 is 24 fps and reaches 1080p on social platform exports.
  • Your face and voice. Camera layouts, face tracking and transcript editing make talking through a product easy. Programmable has no webcam.
  • Private transcription. The page says transcription can run locally, with the cloud as an opt-in.
  • Price for one job. At $9 a month on the yearly plan it costs less than any Programmable plan, and every feature is on every plan.

Where Programmable is better

  • Any computer. Screen Studio's own answer on Windows is that there are no near-future plans to add it. Programmable runs in a browser on Windows, Linux or a Mac.
  • No take to get right. You don't need a clean run, a tidy desktop or a quiet room. A few screens are enough, and the studio works out the story. Making a demo from screenshots walks through the order and sizes.
  • Hiding data. A still can be retaken with sample data, or covered with Hide in the capture extension, which installs from a zip for now. Check every screen again before you upload it.
  • Illustrative UI. With no screens at all, the product is rebuilt as illustrative UI. That helps before a feature is finished.
  • More than video. The same plan makes graphics, decks, logos and website components, and a film can be a share link, an embed or a React component instead of a file.

Screen Studio gives students and educators 40% off. It no longer sells one-time licences, so a one-off price quoted in an older roundup won't apply to a new purchase. Its page says existing licences stay valid. Programmable's plans and credit amounts are on its pricing page.

The price models differ. Screen Studio is a flat fee for a tool you use yourself, as much as you like. Programmable's fee includes AI work, so it's metered in credits.

How to decide

Use these in order, and stop at the first that fits:

  1. Not on a Mac? Programmable, or another recorder for your system. Screen Studio isn't an option.
  2. Need over 60 seconds? Screen Studio. Programmable doesn't do it.
  3. Showing real behaviour to technical viewers? Screen Studio. They'll want to see the actual product.
  4. Need your face or your voice? Screen Studio.
  5. Want a short film for a homepage or launch, in your brand? Programmable.
  6. Can't record, because the data is live or the feature isn't finished? Programmable, from sanitised screens or illustrative UI.
  7. Also need graphics, a deck or a logo? Programmable covers those. Screen Studio doesn't try to.

Plenty of teams would use both: Screen Studio for tutorials, Programmable for the 30-second version on the homepage.

Moving between them

A Screen Studio export works as input to Programmable. Upload the MP4, up to 200 MB, and the key screens are pulled out for an animated demo. Treat that as a new film, not a conversion: the footage, zooms and your voice won't carry over, and at most 8 screens are used. If your export is over 200 MB, a short clip of the key flow works better anyway. For more on what this route gives you, read about product demos from your screens.

The other way, there's nothing to move. Screen Studio records your screen, so you'd record the flow fresh. Your Programmable MP4s stay yours and keep playing wherever you've put the files.

Common questions

Is there a Windows version of Screen Studio?

No. Its homepage says there are no near-future plans to add Windows support. If you need an actual screen recorder on Windows, look for one built for it, because Programmable isn't a recorder. If you want a short animated film instead, Programmable runs in any browser.

Can Programmable zoom and pan like Screen Studio?

Films are animated around your screens, with your product filling the frame, but it's built from stills, not a recording. If you want the look of a real cursor moving through a real app, use a recorder.

Can I try Programmable with no screenshots at all?

Yes. Start from a sentence or a link and the product is rebuilt as illustrative UI. There's also a no sign-up tool for turning screenshots into video in your browser.
