Launch visuals for Product Hunt and AppSumo
For AppSumo, use plain screenshots at 1920 × 1080 or larger, because AppSumo bans text, overlays and illustrations on images. For Product Hunt, use 1270 × 760. The Capture extension sizes your window to both, and the studio makes the launch film and the graphics around it.
Who this is for
This is for a founder or small team preparing a Product Hunt launch, an AppSumo listing, or both, who wants to get the assets right first time. The two sites have different rules, and the rules matter more than the design.
What each site asks for
| AppSumo | Product Hunt | |
|---|---|---|
| Images | 1 header or hero image, up to 5 product images | At least 2 gallery images |
| Size | Minimum 1920 × 1080 | 1270 × 760 recommended |
| File | JPG or PNG only, 5 MB at most | Animated GIFs can be used. No gallery file limit stated |
| Text on images | Not allowed | No ban on its launch page |
| Thumbnail | None listed | Square, 240 × 240 recommended, under 3 MB |
| Video | No spec found | YouTube links only, not private |
| Words | Set in your listing | Tagline up to 60 characters. Description up to 500 on its launch page, 260 in its help article |
These figures come from AppSumo's image guidelines and Product Hunt's launch page, read on 31 October 2026. Check both again before you submit.
What AppSumo won't accept
AppSumo says not to add banners, compilations, watermarks, icons, overlay graphics, text or messaging. It also rules out headlines, stickers, stamps and emojis over the design, and it doesn't accept illustrations or abstract media. It asks for one view per image.
That affects what you can use from Programmable:
- A marked-up capture isn't usable. Arrows, boxes, highlights and text from the extension's markup all count as additions.
- A designed graphic isn't usable. Anything from Graphics has layout and text on it. Don't submit one as a product image.
- A film still may not pass either. A frame with captions has text on it, and rebuilt illustrative UI is an illustration.
- A full-page capture isn't one view. Capture a single screen at a time.
The guidelines don't mention blur. A blurred patch could still read as an overlay, so the safest AppSumo screenshot uses sample data and needs no blur at all. AppSumo's listing policy also asks you to represent the product honestly, so show screens that exist. For the full rules, read our guide to AppSumo listing images.
What you start from
Your live product with sample data, the Capture extension, and a Chrome-family browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave or Arc). The extension is included with every account. It installs from a zip in developer mode until it's on the Web Store.
What happens, step by step
- Fill a workspace with realistic sample data, and hide anything private.
- Open the page and, in the extension's Page size menu, pick 1920 × 1080 for AppSumo and 1270 × 760 for Product Hunt. Don't use 1280 × 720 or 1440 × 810 for AppSumo, because both are under its minimum.
- If your screen is smaller than the size you picked, Chrome won't make the window that large, and the extension tells you what fits. Use a larger display for the 1920 × 1080 set.
- Press Visible area, click the capture in the tray, and press Download to save it as a PNG. Don't add arrows or text to an AppSumo image, because its rules ban them.
- Check each file. On a high-density display the PNG can have double the pixels. That clears AppSumo's minimum but can pass its 5 MB limit, so convert it to a JPG if it does.
- Send the same screens to the studio for the launch film. Here, markup and blur are fine, because the images only feed the film. Up to eight screens are used.
- Answer the questions with YouTube as the platform, so the MP4 exports at 1920 × 1080. Upload it to YouTube, then paste the link into Product Hunt.
- Make the graphics around the launch with the Launch kit set, and the thumbnail from your logo pack.
What you get
| Asset | Size or format | Goes on |
|---|---|---|
| Plain screenshots | 1920 × 1080 or larger, PNG or JPG | AppSumo header and product images |
| Screenshots, marked up if you like | 1270 × 760 | Product Hunt gallery |
| Launch film | MP4 at 1920 × 1080, up to 60 s | YouTube, then Product Hunt |
| GIF | 8 fps, up to 12 s | Product Hunt gallery |
| Launch kit graphics | Share image 1200 × 630, blog header 1600 × 900, email header 1200 × 400, Instagram square, LinkedIn 1200 × 627, X 1600 × 900 | Your site, email and social posts |
| Logo pack icon | 512 px PNG, scaled down to 240 × 240 | Product Hunt thumbnail |
Graphics has no 1270 × 760 format, so make Product Hunt gallery images from captures. Films have no exact 1270 × 760 shape either. Landscape 16:10 is the closest. Product Hunt gallery sizes covers the details.
What it costs
Capturing screens with the extension uses no credits. A typical directed film uses about 63 credits, or $6.30, and a draft usually under 15. A set of graphics is one design call, a small charge settled to the AI used, and every size after that uses no further credits. The trial includes 120 credits with no card, which covers about one film. If you're launching once, that may be enough to judge it. After that, Starter is $29 a month with 350 credits. Pricing has every plan.
When another route is better
- You need a designed AppSumo header. AppSumo offers its own Figma header template, so start there.
- You only need clean screenshots. Your browser's own screenshot tools are enough, and you won't need a plan.
- You need a long launch video. Films stop at 60 seconds. A freelancer or a real recording suits a founder story.
A brief you can paste
This uses a made-up product. Send your screens with it.
"Launch film for Acme Invoices, an invoicing app for freelancers, for our Product Hunt launch on YouTube. 30 seconds. Open on the problem: chasing unpaid invoices. Then show my three screens in order: timesheet, invoice preview, paid dashboard. End on the tagline: Get paid without the admin. Keep the words on screen short, and use our brand kit."
Common questions
Can I use the same images on both sites?
Only plain screenshots, because anything marked up or designed for Product Hunt breaks AppSumo's rules. Even then, a 1920 × 1080 screenshot is 16:9 and Product Hunt's recommended size is closer to 5:3, so it may be shown differently. Capturing at both sizes takes a few extra minutes and gives you a file made for each.
Does a retina screen get me to 1920 × 1080 from a smaller size?
It might, because a high-density display can double the pixels in a capture. We haven't tested this on every setup, so check the saved file's dimensions rather than rely on it. Picking 1920 × 1080 in the extension is the dependable route.
Can I post a video on my AppSumo listing?
We found no video specification on AppSumo's public guidelines or listing policy, so ask your AppSumo contact. A film made for YouTube is at 1920 × 1080 if one is accepted.
